Audio enters a new era of measurement and accountability, according to new report.

A new report from IAB, Unlocking the Power of Data-Driven Audio, highlights how advances in measurement and technology are transforming the role of audio within modern media plans.

The report argues that audio has historically operated differently from channels such as display, social, video and connected TV when it comes to measurement. However, developments in exposure measurement, attribution, identity resolution and interoperability are increasingly bringing audio into the same planning, measurement and optimisation frameworks used across other media.

Importantly, this evolution encompasses the whole audio ecosystem – including broadcast radio, streaming audio and podcasts – rather than digital audio alone.

One of the report's central arguments is that audio's effectiveness has historically been ahead of the industry's ability to measure it. The emergence of audio pixels, dynamic ad insertion, identity resolution and more sophisticated attribution and outcomes measurement is now making it much easier to connect audio exposure with business results.

Audio data is also becoming increasingly interoperable. Rather than sitting within separate audio systems, campaign and audience data can increasingly feed into the same marketing mix modelling, attribution and cross-media measurement systems used for other channels. IAB argues that perceptions of audio measurement have not yet caught up with these advances.

The implications go beyond post-campaign measurement. Better exposure and conversion data means advertisers can increasingly optimise audio campaigns while they are live, shifting investment towards better-performing markets, audiences and environments.

The report also provides compelling evidence of audio's ability to add incremental reach to broader media plans. In one US omnichannel campaign, audio delivered 25% incremental reach beyond audiences already exposed to connected TV and out-of-home. In another, streaming audio and streaming TV had just 1.2% audience overlap, with audio providing 75% incremental reach beyond streaming TV alone.

For the Irish market, the direction of travel is particularly significant. As audio becomes more addressable, measurable and integrated with wider advertising technology, advertisers have greater opportunities to combine radio's scale with the targeting and accountability increasingly expected from digital media.

The IAB report ultimately points towards an audio market where planning, activation, measurement and optimisation become increasingly connected – making audio's contribution to omnichannel campaigns easier to demonstrate and act upon.
