Radio is One of Ireland’s Biggest Daily Habits as 3.5 Million Tune In Every Weekday

The latest JNLR/Ipsos figures underline radio’s remarkable place in the everyday lives of Irish people, with almost 3.5 million adults tuning in on an average weekday.

The results show that radio is not simply a medium with enormous reach; it remains one of Ireland’s most widely shared daily habits. Some 78% of the adult population listens to radio every weekday, while 89% tune in over the course of a week.

Radio’s ability to form part of people’s daily routines extends across different ages and audience groups. Over 2.6 million main shoppers listen every weekday, representing 80% of that audience, while 76% of ABC1 adults tune in on an average weekday.

Younger audiences also continue to listen in significant numbers. Almost 900,000 15–34-year-olds listen to radio each weekday, representing 65% of that age group. Among 15–24-year-olds, 59% tune (417,000) in on an average weekday.

The figures demonstrate the scale of radio’s role in Irish life at a time when people have more media and entertainment choices than ever before. From the morning routine and the commute to the working day and the journey home, radio continues to provide a shared soundtrack to the day for millions of people.

Local and regional radio is a very important part of this daily habit, with almost 2.3 million adults listening to a local or regional station every weekday.

Radio is increasingly being consumed across different devices as listening habits evolve. Connected devices now account for 12% of all radio listening and 18% among 15–34-year-olds, demonstrating how audiences are combining traditional radio listening with smart speakers, mobile phones and other connected devices. 8% of all radio listening is now through a smart speaker.
